Einstein has always maintained that doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is madness. It is sheer madness. You don’t grow by doing the same thing over and over again. You grow by being better, by doing better, by striving for better. As humans, it is a natural inclination to stay in places that provide comfort. It is our natural inclination to cling onto that which makes us comfortable.
The problem with comfort is that it nests complacency. Sure you could stay in the same job for 10 years doing the same thing you were doing 10 years ago. But the question becomes: what new concepts are you learning that are making you get out your comfort zone? Chances are, if you are doing the same thing over and over again, you are bored out of your mind. You are doing monotonous work. Look, this is not to say you shouldn’t stay in the same profession. If your profession is your passion, what I am trying to say is that you should challenge yourself to know different aspects of your profession. There is no such thing as linear alignment in any profession.
Linear alignment is defined as having a singular perspective or way of being. No profession has a singular alignment. Your job is to find what different aspects your job encompasses and then work hard to insert yourself in different spheres of your job. For instance, being a writer has a myriad of aspects to it. If you are a Freelance Writer who specialises in writing travel and lifestyle writing, master your area of expertise and then move on to another niche. In that way, you will be a diversified writer. Don’t be the writer who only knows how to write about a singular niche. Don’t be the linear professional. Make it your job to find out what more you can do to be better and do better. In all you do, don’t be the same, be better. That is how you learn and expand your horizons.
Paving a better tomorrow for your life means having the desire to get to the point where you realise that the life you are living is the life you have always aspired to have. That realisation comes not without hard work and effort. In order to be extraordinary, you must find extraordinary ways of doing things and implementing them to better your life.
The important aspect of being better tomorrow than what you are today is the willingness to change and explore new territory. Sure, it will be scary. Any uncharted waters are scary. But the beauty of new explorations comes with the realisation that you have challenged yourself to more and you have risen to the occasion. This is an affirmation to yourself that bolsters your esteem and sends a powerful message that you can do what you set your mind to and that you want to strive for betterment. You learn by staying away from the comfort zone.
Admittedly the comfort zone is cosy and cushy, but you have to leave that cosiness in favour of boldness and learning new aspects about yourself you had not known. Life is a series of learning experiences. You are the sum of your compounded experiences. The message here is don’t be the same, be better.
To all those reading this and thinking that I am talking a whole lot of bollocks, I have a challenge for you. Choose one thing you have always wanted to do but haven’t gotten around to doing. Do it diligently and consistently. Track your results. Within a month, you will see results. That is the true hallmark of progress and striving for betterment. Oh and did I forget to mention that you will have one more skill to add to your book of life?! Try it.
